In the recent Karmi’s Musings – Down ‘n Out in Old Town, Florida post I mentioned living in a remote area ‘n that my Verizon Wireless internet ‘n phone provider had improved my phone’s performance, but had dropped my LTE Home Internet’s performance from 20-35 MB/s down into the kbps area. I barely use the phone, but probably average 72-75 GBs of data a month. Haven’t made or received 75 phone calls in over 2-years.
Just ran a Google (was Stadia) Speed Test: 0.15 Mbps download speed.
How fast is dial-up internet?:
Dial-up internet has a maximum speed of 56 kbps. In practice, dial-up speeds can be much slower. The FCC defines broadband as any connection with a download speed of 25 Mbps and an upload speed of 3 Mbps. That means that even the fastest dial-up connection would have to be almost 500 times faster in order to meet this standard.
OK…I’m getting a little faster speeds than the old dial-up connections, but my current speeds in 2022 really seem slower than dial-up did in 1992!?! Here’s a handy link: Mbps to MB/s Conversion Table.
Fortunately, my current speeds are not as slow as the predicted “Year of the Linux Desktop” arrival’s speed. Some say that 1998 was the first year that the claim “Year of the Linux Desktop” started, but I dunno. Simple fact is – ‘Year of the Linux Desktop‘ is never going to arrive. Linux is an Enterprise OS ‘n not made for or even focused on ‘normal people‘.
Chrome OS was released 11 years ago and it has already past Linux in popularity:
BTW, the Linux OS is made up of over 3,000+ versions, and all by itself Chrome OS beats them all combined. That chart is from Digital Analytics Program (DAP). Steven Vaughan-Nichols said, in 2018, that ‘Perhaps the most unbiased numbers are from the federal government’s Digital Analytics Program (DAP).‘ He was comparing it against NetMarketShare & StatCounter.
- Personally, there are about a dozen or so Linux OSes that I like a lot better than Chrome OS.
Progressions – ‘Change Is A Comin‘
Not sure what changes are going to happen at this time, but I doubt Verizon is going to fix what they have done to my internet connection. Heck, Verizon could be/could’ve been working on getting 5G out here, and I have seen ‘Thangs break when they switch G’s on me.
Am not going to rush out ‘n get a satellite ISP again…see my Karmi’s Musings – Down ‘n Out in Old Town, Florida post on some reasons why.
Slow download speeds are definitely going to slow down the amount of Linux OS tests I conduct ‘n review; however, I had already cut a lot of Linux reviews down to those with no annoying “Authenticate” popups and/or other pestering ‘Pesky Passwords’.
The blog gets a majority of its views from Search Engines, so my Muse Orca is the only one who will really really really miss my postings, if I do end up posting less.
Also, the actual download speeds fluctuate a lot, most being more than the “0.15 Mbps” mentioned above, e.g. just got this: 0.307 Mbps or 307 kbps. OK…still slow since it takes 8 Mbps to get a speed of 1 MB/s, but the fluctuating can get to 2 MB/s at the right times.
Yeah, it takes patience as in – 1. the capacity to accept or tolerate delay, trouble, or suffering without getting angry or upset. 😉
